STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- It's one of Georgia's most famous landmarks and the largest carving of its type in the world.

But now an Atlanta man wants the Confederate Memorial relief on Stone Mountain removed.

"It's almost like a black eye or an embarrassing smudge on our culture," McCartney Forde told 11Alive News on Monday.

That's how Forde feels about the 2 football field-wide carving of Confederate President Jefferson Davis and Generals Robert E. Lee and "Stonewall" Jackson that towers 400 feet above the mountain's base.

Personally I would say let it stay. I know there are offensive things about the Civil War but we can't pretend history didn't happen.

Why does this delusional person merit media attention?

It's too much. I understand moving statues and things like that but to destroy what could be Georgia's most famous work of art would be a travesty.

Craziness. What exactly is offensive about the carving? There are Confederate statues and monuments all over the South commemorating one of the worst wars in U.S. history. It seems pretty appropriate to me.

This sounds like someone looking for attention.

Perhaps if the image were altered to include Rosa Parks riding on the rump of one of the majestic horses, this would be a non-issue??

But seriously, I doubt many people are offended by Stone Mountain. I think some confederate monuments should be moved to less prominent locations but we shouldn't just destroy art even if it is objectionable.

You can't erase history by destroying a monument. For reference - see Taliban in Afghanistan. This guy's basically asking to do the same thing.

This could probably attract more support if he lobbied to have wartime leaders of the United States on the monument alongside the wartime leaders of the Confederate States. (Perhaps then-Genral Grant and President Lincoln). Removing it, however, is extreme, impolitic and sets a troubling precedent for art.
