Hi all!

We live in Florida, and we're sick of the beach! For summer vacation we're looking to come up and rent a lake house near Atlanta. It's so hard to tell what an area is really like when we're so far away, I was wondering if anyone would mind sharing their thoughts on the best areas to rent a lake house for a week or so in the summer.

Here's what we're looking for...

1) House rental on or near a lake
2) Fun activities nearby for kids (pools, water slides, lake beaches)
3) Great restaurants nearby
4) Golf would be a plus, but not required

We have a golf cart we could bring, so a community that is cart-friendly would be a huge bonus.

Thanks in advance!!!

Well, do you want a quiet lake w/ no motor boats, for a mountain/wilderness experience, where kids can canoe safely and fish and enjoy nature. Or do you want a lake that allows speed boats, for a more fast-paced, water-skiing experience?

And what are you looking for--on a scale of 1 being the tackiest strip of Myrtle Beach and 10 being the most sedate upscale Ritz Carlton type thing, what are you picturing for your trip?

Oh, good questions! All of our kids are LOUD, so we're looking for the loudest, busiest lake where we'll fit in and zip around with kids screaming on the tube behind us.

On the tackiness scale, I'd say our tastes are definitely Ritz Carlton, but maybe on a Hilton budget. We might spring for the right place, though.

These are the lakes I would look for vacation rentals , if this were my family 1) Lake Blue Ridge ( the town of Blue Ridge is charming with lots of quaint places to visit and eat at .
2) Lake Chatuge - in Hiawassee , Ga . This lake sort of intertwines with the town . Hiawassee , though not as quaint (IMO) as Blue Ridge , still is a neat town to explore and it is the home of the Georgia Mountain Fair .It also is not real far from Brasstown valley resort which has golfing .
3) Lake Rabun - It is the smallest of the lakes I will mention . It has Clayton as a near by option for shopping and restaurants.
4) Lake Burton - also in Rabun County . This is my absolute favorite lake in Georgia . It is just beautiful . It has a golf course just to the north of it .
These lakes are fairly busy this time of year so noisy kids shouldn't be a problem.

Thank you so much, gofalcons, that is exactly what I was looking for!!! If ever need any advice on South Florida, let me know

If you want rural, Lake Wedowee in Alabama offers some beautiful scenery and non crowded waters. Only 2hrs away. Check there for deals on rentals.

If you want to boat on Lanier, you must be able to tolerate crowds. Not sure why anyone boats there to be honest.

Lake Blue Ridge is gorgeous and you get the benefit of mountain activities nearby.

We rented a boat on Lake Lanier one year for 4th of July. Holy. Crap. After the fireworks, with every boat leaving at the same time, in the dark, I was shocked we didn't flip over. I swear some wakes were 4 feet high, and it was just a sea of red, green, and white lights.

If you decide on Blue Ridge, be aware that there is one marina with limited rental boats. So call ahead as soon as you can. Further, you'll likely want to rent one of e many mountain cabins nearby the lake. Lodging is mostly B&B style.

We've rented a house on Lake Oconee and have stayed at the Ritz at Reynolds Plantation (not that expensive and they have great deals during the week) also on Lake Oconee. Totally fun b/c they had all sorts of canoes and paddle boats for the kids, fishing...We also like when we rented a house through VRBO® is Vacation Rentals By Owner. . .we had our own fishing dock, ate at the Ritz one night, and visited historic Madison for cute shops/restaurants. I am not sure about other entertainment but I'm betting it would suit you. . .Have you thought about Callaway Gardens? It is so much fun to bike around that area with kids.
