I thought the same thing about the number of people who travel GA400 not really increasing when the tolls are removed, but some very astute posters quickly put me in my place. I am sure some of those same fine folks will be here shortly to tell you that speeds will begin to exceed 90-100 MPH on 285 now.

These are all good points.
The variable tolls on HOT lanes were not necessarily originally intended to cover the costs of building and operating the HOT lanes within the near or immediate term.
The tolls on HOT lanes were originally only really intended to keep traffic flowing on at least one or a few lanes of the most severely-congested roads by pricing excess traffic out of the lanes during the busiest times of day.
But with rising numbers of drivers using the lanes, it might be possible for the lanes to EVENTUALLY cover their costs.

Glad they're raising the speed limit on I-285. Now I'll only be 12 over the limit instead of 22 over.

They could raise it to 80 and it'd only be catching up with the flow of traffic anyways. Doing 55 on 285 will get you run off the road.

Speaking of which, am I the only who cannot figure out why GA doesn't simply enforce the speed limit and collect money from the tickets? The way that people in Atlanta alone drive, this would be a huge windfall for the city. Need more money? The obvious is to simply enforce the speed limit. Is this rocket science?

People out there don't go any faster than they already on I-285. The only places it gets faster is when you get very far away from Atlanta into the 70mph zones, and even then it's only a 5mph increase generally. The top traffic speed won't really increase all that much.

In the northeast and Chicago, you are required to do the speed limit. Otherwise, you run a real risk of getting a ticket.
