When I moved to Georgia a few weeks ago I was living with someone and it didn't work out. I have since found a roommate, but I prefer to have my own place. I am receiving unemployment and I also have enough money in the bank to pay upfront for a 6 month lease with a budget of up to $600 a month. There are so many places to live in that I don't know where to begin. I have two questions:

1.) How easy or difficult is it to rent an apartment with no 9 to 5 while having money in the bank?
2.) What are the safest areas for me to live in? I want to live within 20 miles of ATL.

With a $600 budget?? As in, including utilities? Sometimes you can find steals on craigslist, and that might be your best bet, because the regular apartment market is going to be more expensive than that and more stringent on your sources of income.

Btw, I've used craigslist for every apartment I've been to in NYC and practically all the roommates I've had in ATL were from craigslist.

From a preliminary search on craigslist, there's apts in your budget in Conyers and Jonesboro. I think Conyers might be the safest. But search thoroughly and also look into subleases--some of those can turn into full year leases: atlanta apts/housing for rent classifieds - craigslist

Find something in your budget first with craigslist or promove, and then come back to the forum with the neighborhood name to see what's safest.

I didn't go in person, but I talked to a couple of different reps from promove and they said I need at least $15,000 in the bank to rent through them without being employed.

Are you sure you called Promove? If so, try the one on Peachtree. Promove is just a free apt search service that provides you listings based on the criteria you provide. You don't rent through them. They get paid by the apartment complexes if you sign a lease and list them as the referral source. They shouldn't care whether you have two nickels to rub together in the bank; that's up to each apt complex.

If you're getting unemployment, then technically you are receiving income. You get taxed on it, right?

I think if I were in your position, I'd probably try to sell the fact that you'd be paying the apt up front for how ever many months your bank account will allow so you'd actually be less of a risk than the average tenant. You'd also likely have good luck with private renters once good old fashioned greed kicks in.

The more I think about it, you may need to look for a basement apartment in someone's house until you can figure out exactly what you're trying to do. I would not normally recommend the suburbs based on my personal experience, but Marietta, Alpharetta, Chamblee, Roswell, Tucker, Litihia Springs or maybe even Norcross could work for you. I don't want to take a tongue lashing for this, but try to keep it north of I-20.
