I don't think,Atlanta needs somebody from the "North" or North pole to plan for the snow.
1-everybody drives in Atlanta, need to cut on driving by expanding the railways, metro, the bus lines, bikes and motorbikes roads.
2-Need to spread the working hours, everybody start work at 9am and leaves at 5pm,why is that ?
3-A real need to decentralize certain services and take them out of the downtown area to the suburbs to cut on the morning rush towards the city.
Your suggestions are helpful but maybe I don't want to skate on the sidewalk either.
There would not be sheets of ice if they had simply put some salt down prior to the storm. And "they" is whoever drives the trucks that put it down.

This is a genuine cluster of events.
I think that it's a long history of bad choices in Atlanta, choosing highways over public transportation is just a horrible choice for the city.
In Atlanta, traffic is ugly all year long, snow or shine,so snow is not the cause of the cataclysm,it's the traffic that is the city number one problem.
This should be a lesson, to all those who oppose expanding MARTA, and any new freeways. The area is expected to grow by at least 3 million more people by 2030. Thats 3 million more people who could potentially be exposed to this mess. The leaderships of the region need to come together over a round table and put all beliefs aside and finally expand this regions infrastructure because it's becoming dangerous and lives are in danger.
Hahaha 1 to 2 inches brings an area to crawl. I blame the State and Suburban Anti-Atlanta transit expansion attitudes.
I am not suggesting the area should mirror Dallas, L.A. or Houston however even the addition of the Northern Arc and a southern bypass would have helped out tremendously especially in times like this.

You can't put 18 wheelers on a choo choo, nor would choo choos have materially alleviated this problem unless we had hundreds of billions to create a vast network and then the ability to get folks from the choo choo stations to their homes.

We somehow have billions for highways though. The second issue is fixed with denser development.
People will say anything to keep and justify their BMWs and lifted trucks. Typical southerner mindset.

You can't do #1 and #3 at the same time. The reason Atlanta has such a hard time expanding transportation in all forms is BECAUSE we're too decentralized. With a more centralized city, traffic flow/patterns can be better predicted and rail lines radiating out from the center can be more justified. We already have enough of the suburb-to-suburb movement.

There is nothing the city can do when the region and state fight it.
This is why I can't understand why Kasim Reed is taking SO MUCH heat for this. He's partly to blame, but only 10% of the total metro population are his constituents...
