Dallas and Houston are not fair comparisons. The mountains around Atlanta spread the burbs out even more thinly.

Oh, I agree. Our intown suburbs generally have good elbow room, which is one of the reasons I'm such a staunch defender of them.

elbow room, elbow room...................AAAAahhhhh!!!

Everytime I hear that term it like nails on a chalkboard. I picture some old geezer sticking one arm out doing a poor rendition of the "chicken" to describe "elbow room"

Just messing with you man, I get what you are saying. We just need to work on getting you some new verbiage.

I know just how you feel. The word 'sprawl' elicits the same reaction from me.

I'm not against "elbow room" or a circumference of space at all(still working on an alternative). I am a native of Atlanta......it's in my DNA. I just think we need smarter growth. We can't just keep building everything, everywhere. The 2 can coexist.

The sprawl is driven by people's preference for large houses and large backwards. So sprawl is not bad if people did not have to travel to and from their homes to work in the major business hubs in Downtown, Perimeter,... Most of the suburbs around Atlanta are self sustaining cities: Alpharetta, Roswell, Sandy Springs... There is no need for people living in these cities to travel to Atlanta since all the amenities of modern living are available nearby. Can work be organized differently so that people do not have to travel daily, can we encourage larger companies to have satellite campuses, more-telework, and other initiatives that will help people limit long commutes.

"elbow room" is great for people to have the option of. But not everyone wants that.

Government policy should not be favoring it and taxing those that want to live in a smaller place in the city to pay to keep living in the suburbs cheap. If you "need" a 4,000 sq ft house and an acre yard you should be paying full price for it and your commute.

It's not just me, though. Google up "elbow room" and urban planning or new urbanism, etc. Everybody talks about it.

Urbanism involves more density. But whatever, do what you want. Just don't force it on me. I want to live close to places where I work and play and don't want to be car-dependent.

Also,.to be fair, there isn't a large city in the country that doesn't have severe transportation problems. New York and San Francisco may be denser and have subways, but they have terrible congestion all the same. There's really no perfect solution, short of telling every family to put mom back in the kitchen and off the highways, and nobody's interested in doing that. It's one of the reasons I prefer living in a medium sized metro. Big cities are fun to visit, but just too much trouble for every day.
