in may i would have lived in atl for a year, totally enjoy the city but had horrible luck finding a beautiful home that wasnt dated and over priced so i took my home search outward and lucked up on building a new home with all the bells and whistles in lawrenceville,ga . however part of me wonders, is it possible to live further out and truly be able to enjoy the city that has truly grown on me? i know its not to far a cry from atlanta, but i must admit i will greatly miss it, not having piedmont park or atlantic station or eclectic restaurants and people, just a couple exits from where i stay. any suggestions how i can still enjoy and get familiar w the city even tho moving further out? thanks

Do what most metro Atlantans do on a daily basis, which is to get in your car and DRIVE!

It may not be the most-desirable thing to have to do, nor may it be the most politically-correct thing to say, but what other way are you going to be able to enjoy the treasures of the city while living in suburban Lawrenceville?

Well, if you are just totally dead-set against driving into the city on a frequent basis, you could also drive to the Doraville MARTA Station and take the MARTA train into the city and explore the city on foot.

But with an embarrassing dearth of transit options out in the Lawrenceville area and Gwinnett County, what other options are there either but to drive or drive and take transit the rest of the way?

Currently, I'm out of state for an extended and indefinite period of time on business.

But I've lived all over the Atlanta metro area over the years in locations like West End, Lithia Springs, College Park (both OTP and ITP), Conley, Doraville and Norcross.

All of those locations I liked and disliked for various reasons, but the city/area I probably liked living in the most was Norcross because of the sense of community I experienced there.

Do all the things you would do if you lived in Midtown.

But leave the house 30 minutes earlier.

I think what you're talking about is the disconnect you feel with the city when you move to the suburbs. That's real, it happens.

The best thing I can say is temper it with finding local things in your backyard to enjoy. You may be further away from some great restaurants, but you're also closer to great ethnic restaurants in Duluth, closer to the Mall of Georgia, and closer to some great Gwinnett county parks. So try to make sure to appreciate those things, too.

Well, we all make sacrifices.

I never would have left the Lenox Park area of Buckhead if I had a choice...but I could either get a modern house on a beautiful piece of land in Duluth for $200k, or get some old 1950s brick ranch with tiny bathrooms and a weird kitchen where nothing had been updated for $300k. I knew by the time I was done fixing it up, it would have been a money pit.

There's nothing wrong with your first house being where you can afford. If you don't get used to it and can't stand it, you can always go rent in the city again. At least this way, though, you are insulated instead of having to deal with the skyrocketing rents in the city. Talk to your friends who are renewing leases and see how badly they are getting screwed.
