A half penny sales tax simply takes a penny out of every other dollar. If the sales tax is 7.5%, first dollar has 8 cents taken from it, second dollar has 7 cents, and repeat like that. At least I believe that's how it works.

No. This is roads. The state will take money from any source it can get its hands on to pay for those. Hotel taxes, fuel taxes, property taxes, flat fees, other general fund sources. The voters don't need to worry their pretty little heads about that.

Transit though, that needs to be 100% user paid. The state might consider letting a county vote to allow citizens to vote for some local funding happen (if we persuade them real hard).

I just read that before coming here. Glad to hear it. I've always said that if business is the language of the sunbelt, then business leaders need to step up. Once they frame it and lobby it in business language and benefits, it will stand a better chance of catching on. I do agree the business leaders need to come to the table and help things like the Beltline and rail. They have a vested interest in attracting the talent needed to keep them moving and helping their home base become healthier and a better place to live.

And Bizjournals has a pretty conservative reader base for the most part a part from the more liberal urban readers(like me) who just want to get a quick scoop on any new development projects.

Because it's the city's job to attract business, not business's job to develop the city.

Providing jobs and paying taxes IS developing the city. Businesses use resources too and they don't get free rides.
