I love this - aka the Georgia Demolition Derby. It's so unfortunately true. I might have to steal that term from you.

This gives new meaning to the old saw that "No citizen is safe while the legislature is in session."

Though, I do fear the possibility that the business community may potentially be overplaying its hand and forcing to Deal to think that he needs to appear to the supporters of this bill (who currently dominate the Georgia electorate) as if he is standing up to outside pressure by signing this bill into law.

The factions who oppose this bill have to keep in mind that the pressure on Deal to sign this bill into law is just as intense from the supporters of this bill as it is from the people who oppose this bill.

Numerous conservative interest groups are running robocalls and applying extremely intense pressure to the governor to sign this bill into law....So people who oppose and dislike this bill and view it as being catastrophically damaging to the state's image, reputation and economy have to be prepared for the possibility that the governor may potentially sign the bill into law despite the obvious and growing economic costs.
I think the difference will be that since it is his second term, he doesn't really need the electoral support of the religious community. This is a question of legacy now. I doubt he will want to deliver a major setback to the pro business agenda he has pursued as governor.

You are correct that it is not everyone's way much to their detriment and one need only look at the evidence to confirm this. Please explain of how Christians choosing to not participate in gay marriage is forcing their beliefs on anyone.

So, I just read the editorial by Jesse Petrea in today's Savannah Morning New, explaining the bill. The proposed law is intended to protect certain Faith Based Organizations, only.
Ministers cannot be forced to officiate at any marriage according to their conscience.
FBOs cannot be forced to be open on Sat or Sun.
FBOs cannot be forced to rent a facility.
FBOs cannot be forced to provide charitable services against their belief.
FBOs cannot be forced to hire anyone.
Government can't burden someone's free expression of religion.
None of this pertains to any other business or group, or any organization that accepts Federal money.
I think people really need to read the bill, instead of listening to the lunatic fringe. If the LGBTs want their views to be respected, they need to have the same respect for others.

I think you need to consider the implications. As one example, I'm a foster parent. Maybe I decide I want to adopt a foster child. Well, in many Georgia counties, they use faith-based organizations to provide public services such as foster adoption and support, and fund them with taxpayer dollars.

If this bill becomes law, those "FBOs" would be allowed to deny me the services they provide on behalf of the state if they had deeply religious objections to my marriage or whatever. Of course, they wouldn't, because I'm straight and married to a woman. Only LGBT folks would be subject to this kind of discrimination.

And that's why Deal needs to veto it.

I mentioned what is actually in the bill earlier but everyone is whipped is such a frenzy of indignation that I don't think anyone cares.

I think a lot of people care. There are many problems with the bill, but I'll point out three, even considering your points.

1) See Cameron's post above, it is a good example of a FBO funded with taxpayer dollars being able to discriminate against citizens.
2) It is a slippery slope. This wasn't how the legislation was originally proposed, and therefore it is more than likely step 1, and step 2 will come next year attempting once again to expand the legislation.
3) Economically, it doesn't matter what the bill says or doesn't say. Christians feel like they are under a huge, make believe, attack, and most won't read the bill. They are afraid and ignorant, and therefore spew hate. That hate is associated with this bill. Huge corporations, providing thousands of jobs in this state, see that hate. If they pull out, we're in deep S***. So, regardless of your personal feelings about what it says or doesn't say, the threat of putting this state back into a recession should be proof enough that Deal needs to immediately veto this bill.
