Nah, Atlanta doesn't need all that low-density geographic sprawl with minimal commercial value or other real value.

At this point all it should ever annex is the Druid Hills/Emory area, the Parkview neighborhood and the rest of East Lake, and at least be open to annexing Vinings and Cumberland, should any of the unincorporated Atlanta in Cobb area ever show any interest in joining the city, however very unlikely that would be.

Everything else worth annexing is now already taken. (Sandy Springs and Brookhaven, basically.)

Oh god that's so horrible on so many levels. Make it stop.

And what's even worse is that addresses are still tied to the USPS/ Zip code system which is an entirely different map that completely ignores that one.

Maybe we should put together some kind of grassroots effort to begin the voluntary 'rationalization' of the city boarders; do that whole land trade thing you proposed?

And even if the borders were cleaned up. It still wouldn't be a city, just an arbitrary suburban area with boundaries.

Meanwhile just across the river, Vinings and Mableton have downtowns and well known identity and sense of place, but aren't cities.

Yes, but leadership in Atlanta is intent on annexing majority AA districts in order to ensure continuous AA leadership as the rest of the city gentrifies and gets more white.

Those areas must also want to join the city for the annexation to go through. Can't just tell them that they're in now. There must be a petition of at least 60% majority to join.

Yes but many of them are poor and a drag on city resources and stats used by developers. The city should focus on areas that will bring something to the city, like the unincorporated NE section like Druid Hills, North Druid Hills, etc. Areas with resources that will pay taxes.

And what, just leave people high and dry? There's nothing wrong with providing for those who can't pay their own way, though I have yet to be shown such numbers.

Especially if the whole remains sustainable despite, which aught to be a requirement, sure, but I have yet to see any number to indicate that either the City of Atlanta is not sustainable nor that these areas make it so.

I'm doubtful that the inclusion of a few neighborhoods of lower-income housing on the SW side of the city will terribly swing more wealthy, unincorporated areas of DeKalb any significant bit.
