Newport was at the Downtown Neighborhood Association meeting the other day. They showed a slide deck and did Q&A. They mostly showed the renders that have already been posted, but they also had some maps showing what they were starting to think about for the different streets. Like Broad St being pedestrian zone, etc. Hopefully that presentation gets posted some where. But they did emphasize they are just starting the design work. So things like the renders are still concepts.

Probably the biggest update I got from it is that they said they now control 50 buildings and 4 acres of parking lots.

They really do seem to be all the right things with this project. They confirmed they plan to add no new parking and eventually fill in the parking lots the do buy. The first phases can be expected opened later next year but it will things like the new buildings might not happen for 5-10 years. They are going full in for a mix of uses and getting people out of their cars.

Newport buys South Downtown's historic 142 Mitchell Street

Quote:
  • The German real estate company’s latest acquisition dates back to 1904 and was originally occupied by the wholesale millinery M. Kutz Co. In 1979, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places as the Bass Furniture Building.
  • An affiliate of Newport US RE bought 142 Mitchell Street for $2.9 million, according to Fulton County records. The seller was 142-150 Mitchell Street LLC.
  • More acquisitions could be in the offing. Newport has 222 Mitchell Street, a hulking building that has been eyed by other developers over the years, under contract. The firm is also closely watching progress on a potential sale of the nearby Norfolk Southern building on Spring Street.

Which building are you talking about? I can't find a place where Spring crosses Mitchell. Are you talking about Ted Turner?

Saw the Curbed pictures yesterday. It seems they are really getting it together. Rather than wait for Undergound's grocery store, I think someone should take the plunge and invest in a grocery store DIRECTLY on the streetcar line or near a MARTA station somewhere downtown. This would instantly make downtown a place where you could live/work mostly without a car.

Ugh, that's right. They did rename that part of Spring St.

Newport has another dozen South Downtown buildings and properties under contract between Underground Atlanta and Castleberry Hill. That includes 222 Mitchell Street, a hulking building that has been eyed by other developers over the years.
But if you're talking about the Norfolk Southern building...

Newport is also closely watching progress on a potential sale of the nearby Norfolk Southern building on Spring Street. An unidentified investor has sought to put the project under contract. So far, a deal has not closed for the more than 100-year-old building.
