That station would serve GA Tech, and a lot of increasingly dense areas around there.

If I'm coming in to the city by train from Cumberland or Vinings, it would be my last stop before the Downtown MMPT hub.
Unless built in a parking lot of a Mean St business, that corridor is built up. Any land acquisition would be $$$

Talks of massive downtown Atlanta passenger terminal spring back to life

Really hope the they are able to work MMPT design elements into the gulch. I think it is fine if there are other regional train stations, even ones that serve Amtrak or commuter rail hubs. But you need downtown station for regional rail in some capacity. A key advantage rail offers over air travel is that you end your trip in the middle of the city instead of on the edge. There are not really any other practical locations in the core for a station besides this.

Hell-to-the-naw.

The station/terminal needs to have one name. And that name needs to have Five Points in it.

It's important to have a new beginning while incorporating historical significance.

I agree--on all points.

Yeahp. A central hub is a necessity. We can have plenty of other regionally significant stations in the metro, but the core station is the one absolutely necessary station.

Here's a bit of 'out there' conspiracy thinking. Reed and the Hawks have been working with Beach this whole time. The city is moving, using 'sports funding', and making it look like the gulch is threatened to force the state's hand to act. Beach is the salesman. In reality, the city is fully planning on getting the state a solid deal to make the MMPT happen, and the Hawks, who know first hand how useful transit is to an entertainment venue, is ready to put up funding for it after 'negotiating'.

It's a long shot, but hey, crazier things have happened.

We should call all of South Downtown "Terminus". Sort of like how Philly's Downtown is Center City, it could be something historical and unique to Atlanta.

I am OK with this sort of conspiracy. Maybe that is why we haven't seen details of the gulch plans yet? Because they already had the MMPT in them!

And I don't care what you call it. Heck, sell the naming rights. Just make it happen.

Looks like the Curbed folks are sharing in the conspiracy. From the article:

Is it a coincidence that multimodal talks have been revived just weeks after news emerged, via Mayor Kasim Reed, that the Atlanta Hawks are interested in assembling land to build a billion-dollar entertainment district next to Philips Arena? Hmm.
