I was in Atlanta again with friends hanging out in the Little 5 Points area. How is this area so popular but the sidewalks are old and cracked. There is grass growing up along the flower beds and trees .The general upkeep of the area seems lacking.

I was looking to move to Atlanta one day and I looked at the prices of the houses and its not cheap so why are not these areas kept up better?

Because many people in Atlanta think things like this and tons of traffic are signs of a big city and they are so desperate to feel like the city is massive and international that they're willing to take any sign, even negative ones, that the city is large.

I would imagine it is just part of the identity of the area. No city is going to be pristine all over either. Atlanta has some infrastructure issues just like the rest of the United States.

Little Five Points, East Atlanta Village and the like are among Atlanta's top hippie scenes. Write what you will, but some of the people who enjoy those cracked sidewalks and grassy flower beds are millennials, GA Tech and Emory students. They enjoy the unique shops, restaurants, street performances, parades, etc., activities that probably don't occur very often in the affluent nearby neighborhoods like Candler Park, Inman Park, Poncey and Virginia Highland. Plus the area is just off of I-20, another access point into downtown Atlanta.

As far as the houses are concerned, the area is following the local pattern of re-gentrification. Older properties are renovated with modern wiring, fixtures, plumbing, carpentry, design and more, but you learn of all of that typically upon entering the property since it isn't easy to see from the street.

A little sprucing up is in the works with better sidewalks, bike lanes, and better traffic control, but overall I think people like the non-sterility that the area has.

Can the same question not be posed regarding SoHo, Haight-Ashbury, Calle Ocho, Chelsea, North End and the Vieux Carre?

I like Little Five Points the way it is; not foo-foo like the upper-crust neighborhoods and malls.

OP, throw a weekend long party on your property 52 times a year and see how easy it is to keep it looking pristine.
