West End, Grant Park, Summerhill and Mechanicsville all predate Inman Park. I had a great great aunt who lived right where Turner Field is now (Washington St.) in the 1870's.

Summerhill was once a land of grand gingerbread Victorians a'la Inman Park. It was also once VERY heavily Jewish (Washington Street was once the residence of the original Rich Brothers of Rich's Department Store who had their own family compound, or really group of grand Victorian mansions for the entire family.) The city's first synagogue was also located there. Sam Mansell, former Mayor of Atlanta, and present president of the Buckhead Coalition grew up there. The community REALLY slid after World War II and was a slum when "urban renewal" in the form of the former Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium was built in the early 1960's. The original Fulton High (at the time the High School for Fulton County students that lived just south of the old pre-1952 Atlanta City limits) was also located in the neighborhood before so much of close-in South Fulton was annexed into the City of Atlanta and Fulton High (now an Atlanta Public School) was moved to new digs just south of Lakewood Heights along Jonesboro Road.

Things seem to be on the upswing for Summerhill again and I am excited about all the new Georgia State development. Fingers crossed for this historic Atlanta community. ;0)
