Would you be able to elaborate a bit? Our daughter will be going into Middle school next year. Currently she is a student at a private school but what has drawn us to Fayette County schools is the county wide STEM program. She does not have the same opportunity at her private school. That focus does not start until High School.

There are many opportunities for the students to excel. There are advanced classes, concerned teachers and open lines of communication in the district. One thing that I really like about the community is that for the most part everyone is on the same page and people actually care. You run into teachers all of the time in the stores, libraries or in restaurants and the talk is always about the kids, the community and how to make it the best that it can be.

Oh, and the faculty are as diverse as the students.

How did your visit to Flat Rock Middle go? We are moving to the area in a couple of months and have a son that will be entering middle school (also from a private school). I'm planning to schedule a tour soon but would love to hear about your visit.

Cpamom75, we did not get a chance to do a school tour, but we did attend a STEM Symposium today. We felt that was much better than your typical school tour because we were able to spend a great deal of time with the teachers asking questions and getting in depth information on the programs they offer. We felt really good about Flat Rock after speaking with the teaching staff and seeing some of the projects that the kids made/invented.

We did get a chance tour Booth Middle school in Peachtree city. That tour was really good. We had an awesome tour guide (an 8th grade student) and it seemed like they had a lot more resources available than Flat Rock. Understandable when you consider the financial difference of parents of both schools. We are planning to do another tour of Booth and one at Flat Rock with our daughter.

Our tour of Sandy Creek high was not the best. We did not have a great tour guide (10th grade student)... She was sweet but shy and not very informative. We do plan on visiting Sandy Creek again and this time requesting the opportunity to see specific classes instead of the general tour and hopefully being paired with someone who is in an engineering career track or STEM student. That way we could get a first hand account on their experience.

Hope this info helps.
