Thumbs Up Diner on West Ponce de Leon Avenue closed Sunday after a decade in downtown Decatur, Decaturish reports. The restaurant’s owners blame rising rents in the city just east of Atlanta as the reason for their decision and urge residents to speak out against the recent rent hikes.

A sign posted to the door reads:

“I would like to take the opportunity to thank all of you for the last 10 years. I know I speak for the rest of the staff when I say we feel very lucky to have been able to get to know all of you and making memories that we will cherish for a lifetime.

We urge everyone to use their voices to protest the rising rents in this area. Unfortunately, it’s too late for us but you may be able to save other local businesses.”

In the same story, Decaturish reports that DaVinci’s Pizza broke its lease earlier this year due to the high rent at the Decatur location, which owner Jason Black claimed was nearly $11,000 a month — more than his store in Midtown on West Peachtree Street..."

Here is the llink to the original article and not the Eater-rehash of someone else's story. Dan does a great job covering local topics, and deserves the clicks.

I don't know how a place that only sells inexpensive breakfast and lunch dishes and doesn't have alcohol to pad the profits can afford to pay rent anywhere.

Yes, this. I've seen this scenario play out in other neighborhoods in which I've lived: Georgetown, Brooklyn Heights, Winter Park, St. Simons Island. The posh crowd discovers them, more upscale retailers come calling, rents go up. The mom-and-pop businesses are kicked to the curb in favor of trendy labels.

7am-3pm with no alcohol sales and cash only isn't a good business plan.

There's a cheap breakfast place in downtown decatur, it's called waffle house. If they opened late night 11pm-4am or something on weekends they could get tons of business from people coming directly from bars.

And also, take credit. It's 2018 for crying out loud. No excuses. Even girls scouts take credit cards. I say good riddance to any cash only business that goes under.

There's no reason to criticize. I know the owners, and there's no bitterness on their part. Their business model simply didn't work in that location anymore, they knew it, and they moved on.
Best we all do.
