Very interesting article from the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer on the Mayor's proposal for the Columbus Metropolitan Airport to serve as Atlanta's 2nd airport.

Why is that? Columbus is the largest corporate center in Georgia outside of Atlanta. Fort Benning is also there which continues to grow as other bases close around the country and world. It could serve as an option for points south, west, and east. Columbus is centrally located for Georgia, Alabama, and North Florida (panhandle). The airport can already handle large jets. Currently there is service to Atlanta and Dallas. The airport is in talks with Southwest and U.S. Airways. Currently they are exploring the idea of more flights to Dallas. It would be huge for places south of Atlanta.

Seems like a ploy to grow Columbus. I find it hard to believe that there is NO spot in he massive amount of sprawl that is the Atlanta metro to build a second airport.

I agree it would be a good thing for South and central Georgia. Obviously more convenient than having to drive ask the way to Atlanta.

Interesting for whom?

Residents of Columbus? Anyone with the political connections to make a fortune from constructing a red herring high-speed rail between Columbus and Atlanta?

Certainly not interesting for anyone who currently flies into and out of Hartsfield Jackson on a regular basis, that much is certain.

Does not serve the needs of Atlanta one bit. Sure it might serve the needs of a podunk small-city on the Alabama border, but to try to hype your airport up as the solution to an Atlanta problem is ridiculous. Trying to ride Atlanta's coattails while providing nothing. Weak.

Why would you put another airport on the south side of Atlanta? That is the side of town with less business and lower levels of population. If there was to be a second airport, the place to put it is on the north side of Atlanta, near where the business and population is located.

I agree with the others- it'd be great for Columbus, and the high-speed rail to Hartsfield would benefit their citizens, but who in the Atlanta metro would want to bother driving to Columbus to catch a plane, or hopping on a train (I don't care how "high-speed" it is) to get there for a flight?

Ya know, you really need to stop trying to inject logic into these topics.

Of course, based on your reasoning, I'm sure the Mayor of Chattanooga will be pushing for a high-speed rail line from Hartsfield to Chattanooga soon.....lol
