There's a lot of people moving to Florida as well, from other states but a good bit from Georgia as well.

Phoenix has grown slower than Atlanta for the past three MSA Census counts (2021, 2022, and now 2023), so yes, it's growing slower.

What does it look like for about 6 years? Atlanta has sped up some again, back in 2018 or 2019 it had dropped to around 40-50K per year increases in some years.

In the 2018 estimate, Atlanta (+89,000) 3rd overall, Phoenix (+88,000) 4th overall
In the 2019 estimate, Atlanta (+75,000) 4th overall, Phoenix (+99,000) 3rd overall

So it appears out of the last 6 years, Phoenix had 1 year with higher growth and Atlanta had 5 years. So the general trend is Atlanta is growing faster.

Ok seems like Phoenix was going faster for a while which is where those ideas of Phoenix surpassing Atlanta came from. I don't know what happened or when this was, maybe they went back when they did the actual census and realized Atlanta was growing faster than they thought and Phoenix wasn't. I'd be curious to see what the initial estimate was versus the numbers after the census was completed.

I see Atlanta maxing out as the 6th largest... I don't see it overtaking NY, LA, Chicago, Houston, or Dallas.

I do see Houston/Dallas overtaking Chicago tho.

No one knows what the future hold for these cities, but in Atlanta's defense, it could possibly add Hall and Jackson Counties to its MSA. Those counties, esp Hall, is very close to the 25% threshold. Last time I checked, Hall was at 22%. That's another 300,000 plus in two fast growing counties.

Long term Atlanta is likely going to pass Chicago too, Chicago MSA is currently 2.9 million larger, CSA 2.5 million larger and has slow/stinking growth. That's around 3 decades in current growth.

Also It sounds weird, but Atlanta CSA is only 2.8 million short of 10 million.

A lot can happen in three decades. I think it's premature to assume that we'll keep growing like this and Chicago will keep stagnating forever.
