My family and I are relocating to Atlanta in July. I would be working in Buckhead. We need help in determining where to start looking for a home. We want a reasonable commute (+/- 30 minutes) and a housing prince range about 250K. Any advice would be great!

Do you have school aged children?

The area around North Druid Hills Rd/Briarcliff/Clairmont/La Vista--known as the Emory Corridor, Toco Hill Executive Park, etc would have housing options within your price range. My neighborhood, Briarcliff Heights, is comprised of many young professionals--not many school aged children. Older homes/50's/many renovated with 1/3 arcre lots. Very convenient to Buckhead, downtown, Decatur and I85/I285.

Students attend Sagamore Hills Elementary/Shamrock Middle School/Lakeside High School. These are good schools but the DeKalb School System faces considerable change in the coming decade. The schools in the City of Decatur--about 5 miles away are recognized as excellent --you might find homes in your price range in the Oakhurst community.

You would have several options for commuting to Buckhead.

The Mableton area is very convenient to everything with many very nice subdivisions with very affordable homes. Not very far from Buckhead. Smyrna is also very nice with lots of homes to choose from in your price range. I live in this area and love it. Definitely worth looking at.

Sandy Springs (both reasonable and convenient) are a quick 10-15 minute drive from Buckhead. If you are new to the area and are looking to rent before investing in a property, The apartments are really nice and if you have kids, Dekalb county has the best school district. When we were looking, we went to Promove. What they do is give you apartment listings and you can go scope them out. Someone from Gwinnet says Sandy Springs is pricey (I'm from NYC so pricing isn't that bad to me) but you will find rental specials through the folks at promove. They don't charge a fee, they just ask that you tell the rental company you were recommended by them. Windsor at Mount Vernon is a nice property but catch them when they have specials (apts. w/o deals run around 1400 for a 3 bdrm). Hope this helps a bit. Another tidbit: Remember, ATlantians are extremely serious about their peace of mind and their communities so they are really harsh on areas. So things that may not bother you will drive them crazy. But overall a friendly group. Dunwoody/Sandy Springs is a beautiful area.

Actually, we need to know what kind of housing you are expecting for that amount of money... new, old, big, small, how many bedrooms, etc?

Kids, schools, far more details are needed.

Look on the map at Mableton, there are many new subdivisions, and many in your price range. I would be happy to assist you with more information if you would like. Also Smyrna is very convenient.

I recommend looking at Roswell and East Cobb. The commute would be 30-40 minutes but the schools are first rate and the location is excellent. More information is needed to give you a more detailed answer. I live and sell in this area and love it here.
