I am thinking of possibly starting a business when I move here, I am wondering what services or businesses are in demand for the middle class and the wealthy. Any ideas? thanks

Actually recessions are the time to be entrepreneurial. There is always a market for something new and office space/labor is much cheaper at times like this...

As for what you could do, if I knew, I'd be doing it myself

I think the key is to do something that doesn't rely on individual discretionary spending (ie focus on needs, not wants). This is why health care is expected to remain a big field -- need, not want.

I also think something where the government is your client.. since they are busy printing money in DC.

I was at a funeral last week, and while my mind was wondering off somewhere else, i started to think that i really should have been a mortician, specifically, a small town mortician. that or a CPA.

I know we've all heard the "death & taxes" line a thousand times, but its the honest truth.

You'll never run out of work in those two fields.

I was just about to put this in and you beat me to it.

They say certain divisions of the medical field are still growing as well. During times of recession, people might avoid going to the doctor for minor aches and ills, but the major stuff still requires attention more and more. Also, the corner "walk-in" clinics are in high demand in many suburban areas, as many want affordable, quick, walk in/walk out clinics for minor stuff. Of course, these involve med schooling which many may not want to fool with.

Dealing with dead people might take less time to train. At least it's a quiet job and you won't have to chit chat with your clients.

Apparently "cupcake boutiques" are the rage up east...my Brooklyn friends are always talking about what stores have the best designer cupcakes up there.

That fits with a radio piece I heard about how "affordable luxury" businesses are doing quite well in this recession. A spa owner explained that after bracing for a decline in business, her business actually went up. In talking to clients, she learned they were cutting back on bigger-ticket spending such as vacation travel. While spending their vacation days at home rather than in Europe as formerly, they were compensating by treating themselves to smaller luxuries such as a spa visit.

LOL. I've wondered how business at the strip clubs is doing during these hard times. Do people have money to "make it rain" like they did during the good times?
