Hello everyone!

We are relocating from Boston to Atlanta, we want a VERY nice neighborhood, with tons of things for our 2 little boys, very safe and A school system.
But we also enjoy the nightlife and atmosphere of the big city.. Please any recomendations? we'll appreciated them !
Our budget is around 300K for a house, can we get something nice for this price?
My husband will be working in Atlanta, so not to harsh commutes. thanks!

i would say the northeast quadrant of atlanta is what you seek. The further out you go it is newer, cleaner and safer.

also, i would try to live as close as possible to the marta subway system in case gas prices go trough the roof. Thus i would center your search on the end of the subway line in doraville and in sandy springs area.

Do you want something new or would you be okay with an older home in a good area? There are loads of ranch homes for great deals in Sandy Springs and Dunwoody. They're much older but worth investing in, especially if you want to renovate or expand in the next few years. Newer stuff is outrageous in these areas and offers no land.

Welcome..I moved here from Boston a few years ago. Since you want to enjoy the city atmosphere, I would look in Sandy Springs and Dunwoody. 300k won't go very far there though...not sure what size you're looking for.

Just don't venture into Alpharetta..great area but the commute to downtown is brutal.

I can say without hesitation that there are few to no homes in Dunwoody in that price range. A quick check of 30338 on realtor dot com shows 2 homes (actually 4 but they are the same 2 houses plus 3 that have the zip code wrong and are in other places) under 300 and maybe a dozen more that are under 350K. (there are condos and such, but not what the original poster is searching for.)

Depending on your expectations of both housing and schools, Chamblee might work for you -- but your money really doesn't go very far. And DeKalb schools aren't the best -- though we have some good schools, other systems are far stronger.

In many ways, especially in your price range, Atlanta is full of trade offs, to get the family friendly amenities you need to live further from the city center.

300k in Sandy Springs will be a tear-down material in a less-than-ideal location, pretty much the same for Dunwoody. If you can get in for around 300k, do expect to spend additional 100k+ in renovating the house.
