The organizers behind the Evans Towne Center Urban Design Plan are holding a drop-in work session and a second public workshop for input on how Columbia County’s planned multi-use community hub will take shape.

“It’s really important to do a lot of work and spend a lot of time on the front end, making sure you have the mix of land uses that you need to make it successful,” said Andrew Strickland, director of the county’s Planning Services Division. “There are so many different elements that go into it.”

At the drop-in , members of the public can visit the consultants as they work on design plans and offer suggestions and ask questions.

At the public workshop, all the feedback that consultant received at the kickoff meeting March 13 will be condensed into rough conceptual plans, which then will be presented to the audience to elicit more feedback. Visitors can state whether the concepts fit their vision, or if any design elements needs to be tweaked, added or taken away.

"Right now with the plaza we have a parking deck planned, there's a parking deck planned also for the Justice Center right across the street from Evans Town Center Park."

Strickland says these blueprints pave the way for a downtown feel.

"All walkable, you won't have to get in the car hopefully in the future, you can walk from your apartment or your townhome or even your single family home, to work and then out to dinner."

One day the Whitmore’s hope to enjoy it.

"We want everyone in the county to feel like it's worth driving over there to spend the afternoon to shop there or to eat there or to walk around in the parks."

After tonight's meeting there will be a final draft of blueprints made and then those will be shown to the public once more in June for more feedback.
