What's all with all of this celebration of sprawl? A bunch of cookie-cutter houses and strip malls on the outskirts of the city or worse, along the interstate between Augusta and Columbia, is not something to celebrate. If Augusta thinks that building more and more roads is a long-term solution, it's going to be sadly mistaken in a few years.

Secondly, it's definitely a good thing that Augusta has these jobs coming through the pipeline, but these jobs aren't going to propel the metro area ahead of its regional peers; it's going to put them on par with them, which is still a good thing. What am I basing this on, you ask? Metropolitan GDP figures from the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA).

Here are the latest figures (from 2006) of the metropolitan GDPs of Augusta and select peer regional metros:

Augusta: $16.448 million
Charleston: $24.056 million
Columbia: $28.401 million
Durham: $27.874 million
Greensboro: $31.830 million
Greenville: $22.939 million
Jackson: $21.423 million
Knoxville: $27.672 million
Mobile: $13.892 million
Winston-Salem: $22.063 million

So we see that Augusta already lags a bit compared to regional peer metropolitan areas. Let's say that Augusta's economy will nearly double in a few years, which is what one of the articles posted previously suggested. That would make its metropolitan GDP more along the lines of Greensboro's. And as we have seen from previous posts, metro Greensboro has not been growing by 16K-18K a year, but more around 9K a year. So based on this information, I'd say that Augusta might experience an uptick in metro population growth to around 9K-10K a year.

It's good to be optimistic and enthusiastic about your city's progress, but please temper that with a bit of realism.

If growth/sprawl occurs in the Aiken/ SC side of the river.. wouldnt that be a negative for Augusta? These folks may shop there but their income and property taxes would go to SC. Just out of curiosity if someone were moving to the Augusta Metro.. is there much difference between housing prices, taxes etc, between SC and GA? Seems like most of the growth is on the GA side but that could be a by product of location and/or more pro development officials on that side as opposed to SC? I do not know the politics of the area, but I would imagine that Aiken County, SC may be more conservative when it comes to growth/development?

Would say it would have negative effect on Augusta because most Aiken city and Aiken county growth is on the south side towards N. Augusta and Augusta downtown. Its alot of nothing in the northern part of Aiken Co. Now the Sc side of the metro will finally have the Palmetto Parkway, it really opens up the land for development.

And I agree. Really my post was directed towards nortonguy in terms of being a bit more realistic as to how economic growth is going to fuel population growth in the future.

Even if we dont double we are still in good shape. Neck in neck with Greenville would a positive. Im surprised Mobile is that far down, isn't it a port city? Where is Savannah and the other Ga cities on your list?

I was actually a bit surprised at Mobile's numbers myself when I first saw them. Their GDP is sure to increase with that massive steel plant coming to the area, along with some other developments.

Here are other GA metros:

Athens: $5.613 million
Columbus: $10.026 million
Gainesville: $5.660 million
Hinesville: $2.681 million
Macon: $7.345 million
Savannah: $12.196 million
Valdosta: $3.562 million
Warner-Robins: $4.64million
