I'm moving to Austin. I just bought a commercial property at Westgate and William Cannon and would like to rent a house/condo close to this area for $800/mo or so. Any thoughts on living in this area? Is there any place around here that we should stay away from? Any advice on how to find a place to rent?

You won't find a house in that price range in 78745/48. A 2 bdrm duplex is doable, otherwise you're left with apartments.
