Searching for the Soul of Austin - Page 1 - News - Dallas - Dallas Observer

"Today, where once the Armadillo rollicked, there squats an utterly sterile, suburban-looking, glass-sided office building. It's as if Austin had declared an official intent to abandon its good-timing days, sober up and get in the hamster wheel with the rest of the rat race, to mix rodent metaphors. Austin officially decided to barter its imagination for a bid at Houston- and Dallas-sized stacks of cash"

Both the Houston Press and the Dallas Observer are running the written assassination piece as their 'feature' article.

This article is a totally slanted hit piece on Austin from the author (no doubt with the permission of the Houston Press and Dallas Observer's corporate owners). Their message: "There's no need to go to Austin. The spirit of Austin has left "Austin" and now is in inner-city Houston and Dallas!"

What garbage!

I was wondering what everyone would think of this - I live in one of those (old) Austin-like areas of Dallas. Austin has a lot of fans here. And I remember the old Austin BEFORE they put up a sign and then a parking lot for Hippie Hollow.

Problem is, even new Austin is still blows away DFW and Houston.

Think about it; If we weren't around, what would Dallas or Houston "cool inner city neighborhoods" ever compare themselves to?

No. I'm very sure Deep Ellum, the arts district, and Dallas's gayborhood (Oaklawn) were and still are a lot cooler and in vogue than any of Austin's neighborhoods.

Hippy Austin of the '70s & '80s = "Old Austin"?

Don't forget, they also now charge for admission. Just like in the big cities! Travis County Park Fees

Austin is not in vogue!?! Ohhh yeah, that's going to hurt our feelings!

"In vogue?" LOL. Deep Ellum is a filthy dump and is, pathetically, Dallas's best attempt to pretend to be "artsy" and edgy. Only it isn't today and probably never will be again. Dallas has a few interesting neighborhoods but Deep Ellum is not one of them.
