Hi --

I need to figure out which DPS office my 87-year old father should go to for his Drivers's License renewal. He's a good driver (and has by his own decision stopped driving on highways, MoPac, and at night), but I"m not sure he could handle a three hour wait on a hard chair (or standing) at a DPS office in August.

The little-known DL office at 15th and Congress has closed, and their sign points folks to N. Lamar and S. Congress.

Does any one know if the lines at S. Congress are better than N. Lamar?

Are there better times of day to go?

How about offices further out -- isn't there one by Anderson Mill? Anyone know the waits there?

Thanks!

PS, in case anyone is interested, in Texas once a driver has reached 85, he/she must appear in person every two years to renew a drivers license, pass an eye exam, have their driving record reviewed, and, at the discrection of the staff person on duty, take the written and/or driving test again.

I just renewed my license a few days ago b/c I turned 31 and it expired. I went to the North location around 2PM in the afternoon, and was in and out (including an eye test and a new picture) in about 40 minutes.

The workers there told me the WORST time to go is first thing in the morning, as they are packed because everyone thinks they are beating the crowd. She also recommended against Fridays.

YMMV

If she lives in Travis county, doesn't she have to go to one of the travis county ones?

No. DPS is state, not county.

Thanks for the tips. Alas, Georgetown and Taylor are out simply because we can't leave my mother (dementia) alone for more than a couple of hours...

Marble Falls is a great office to go to. Fast, and no one there.

I know Georgetown is out, but just in case you consider it, the wait and the service from the reception desk was horrendous. I knew I should've went to the 183 location, but I listened to my son who said his friend was In and out of the Georgetown location. But then again, it was a Friday and Jaybrown said he was told Fridays are bad. So maybe It ultimately is about time and day. I hope your father can get his license renewed swiftly!

Like the post office, I like to go about 30 minutes before closing time. It's amazing how quickly that line moves when the people who work there are dying to go home. Be carefuly though, if you need to take a field test- there might be an earlier closing time for those.
