I am dying here. Does anyone know if there is a season for mold? Is it going down soon? Are there parts of the city where it is worse than others?

NEVER!!!

Obviously the count rises and falls but there is no particular season or part of town when you can guarantee that there isn't mold. Sorry. My spouse has a mold allergy and I know it is miserable. One advantage to a "real" winter with bitter cold temps is that there is no mold!!

In warm, muggy Austin without almost no hard freezes, we can have mold all year (and do!)

Yeah, don't think it really goes away, but it is worse in the fall around August and then again about now. My daughter has asthma and mold and oak are huge triggers for her.

Yep, there are times it's worse than others, but not really seasonal, per say. Sorry!

It's worse when it has been raining recently, like now. Better, as centralaustinite put it, when it gets really cold... which is not often.

I can also be micro-locally bad due to mold growth in air conditioning units. People often overlook this as a contamination source, but people in the know use bleach regularly to decontaminate their HVAC units.

On the flip side, HEPA filters added to air handling equipment can help a lot, and later model cars have a cabin air filter that should be changed periodically. I've found these helpful in reducing my discomfort.

I have suffered from mold allergies for two year solid (except for the three days I had stomach flu and for some reason they went away -- maybe my body was too busy fighting the flu to pay attention to mold). I am 26 days into my sublingual drops that are going to clear up the allergies I have if they work. By the 30th day I should feel some relief and then by the 3rd month 80% of people no longer suffer from their allergies. You can get them at South Austin Wellness Center on S. Lamar Blvd. I do know the inside of my eyes have been bright red for days and today I pull one open and it's noticeably less red and the natural pink it used to be, and my ears seem to be clear and not full of fluid. If you get ear infections its most likely because of mold allergies.

Here comes cedar season. I noticed the rust colored pollen buds forming on the cedar trees near by. See the chart http://www.centraltexasallergy.com/pollenchart.gif

That chart also shows that mold is usually lower at times but never entirely goes away.

Never.

This is getting old and Cedar Fever is around the corner. Before moving here, I used to question the posters on this forum who claimed their quality of life was lower here because of allergens, thinking they weren't trying hard enough to combat them and it couldn't possibly be that bad. I was naive.

It's weird but even with the dry weather we've been having (no rain in over a month) the mold is sky high. The reason is the mold feeds off the decaying leaves/brush from this time of year.

The only time mold decreases is when the temp is very hot and all vegetation has died off or if it's really cold which it rarely gets here.

It usually goes down just in time for cedar season.
