I just moved to Austin. My job is requiring me to get a Texas DL. Will I be able to get one without registering the car I am currently driving? I do not own the car, it is in a family members name who lives in another state. What are the proper steps?

All the info you need is available on state websites.

For driver's license:

TxDPS - Your Texas Drivers License / ID

Since you do not own the car, you will have to be vigilant that they keep the registration and insurance up to date. I would also advise that you carry a letter from them authorizing you to operate the vehicle.

But if you owned the car, you would need to follow this:

For car registrations:

I had the same situation as you here is what I did. I took my DL, passport and social security card and got a new license. You will get as a piece of paper first and a couple weeks later get a card in the mail. As far as the car they will ask you if you need to register a car say no. You don't it's not your car don't mention it at all they won't press anyway. The car I drive is in my father in laws name and I have been driving it for 2 years.
