Austin City Council members call for independent Austin Energy... | www.statesman.com

So, I'm sure most of you have at least heard or saw something regarding this. I question the need to do this. No matter what reason they say they want it for, I know they really only want it to insulate Austin Energy from the Texas Legislature's desire to deregulate the Austin market and not to increase efficiency. What do yall think?

CPS in San Antonio has operated for years under an appointed council and it has been very efficient. After all the critical review of AE spending, this seems like a very logical move. The odds of AE being deregulated are small and would NOT increase efficiency anyway, imho. The TX legislature has no interest in deregulating the coops and munis at this point - but the big players in the power industry would love to achieve that goal and raise our rates.

My guess is they want to get it out of the hands of the Council before the district-election system comes into being.
