I mean wouldn't it make sense? Wheatesville is a rip off and the nearest HEB is not walking distance. It would be way more convenient to have one in the area proper so that we can walk to it.

There are a few convenience store type place like "Orange Market". But I agree, it would be nice to have an HEB within walking distance for UT students. I'm sure a big barrier is that the cost of land in West Campus is extremely high

I think you nailed it right there. There wasn't a supermarket anywhere near campus when I went to UT in the mid-1990s; closest one was the HEB by 35. There was a bus that went there, but your frozen stuff would melt waiting for it.

And when I went to UT in the 1960's, there wasn't one, either. We went to the HEB at 11th and I35.

There are grocery stores in the wealthiest neighborhoods in town - that includes the CBD which has Whole Foods and several Royal Blue grocery stores.

It's not the cost of land - it's that students don't do much grocery shopping. Its hard to have a full service grocery store selling to people looking for Ramen Noodles, frozen burritos and beer.

Wheatsville has pretty reasonable prices for the quality of food they sell.. It's sort of a specialty grocery store anyway with an emphasis on local foods as well as organic, vegan, gluten-free etc... so not in the same vein as HEB.

I'm a poor college student, yet I try and shop at Wheatsville as much as possible because I like high quality foods and supporting local businesses. Instead of buying a 12 pack of Hot Pockets from HEB, I'll buy a container of salad, bread, and almond butter for roughly the same price.

There was a small neighborhood grocery store called "Nau's" when I went to UT in the mid-80s. It was at San Gabriel and 24th. The big grocery store was HEB at Hancock Center.

Randalls on 35th Street is a lot nicer than the Hancock HEB.
