The Salt Lick is a tourist trap IMHO. And I also avoid County Line BBQ. Its way overpriced.

Here's a BBQ secret that's not bad if you don't feel like smoking a brisquet: HEB Precooked Brisquet. It's pretty good and satisfies my BBQ fix if I can't make it to Donn's.

Salt Lick is pretty good and the cobbler, sides and atmosphere make it worth the trip..

Cooper's is the best. (in Llano)

Ruby's, near campus, is pretty good too.

I think Poke-Joe's is decent.

What's so great about Donn's?

I love Rudy's on 360. They have great sauce, meat and atmosphere. I truly dislike the Salt Lick (though I think everyone should go atleast once).

Is anyone of the board familiar with Luling City BBQ in Houston? I would love to find BBQ like that here in Austin.

I like Goode Co. bbq in Houston. There's a good place in Katy that my MIL goes that was very good. She had a bunch of it waiting for us when we got there one weekend. But, of course, the name escapes me. I guess I'm gonna have to go to Louie Meullers and let those of you who haven't been hear my critique. Taylor cafe too, since I haven't seen any bad reviews of it either. We had bbq in Elgin. The sausage, ribs, and chicken were really good, but my husband wasn't really fond of the brisket. The sides were good.

I dunno. I went as a tourist and I did like it. I do have a sweet tooth though. If you do go, don't miss the peach cobbler. I loved the meal, but I really went for the cobbler.

I must be in the minority.. I love the Salt Lick, and not for the cobbler or the atmosphere. I've seen people on this board complain about the brisket being dry, but that's not been my experience. The habanero BBQ sauce is awesome, too. I don't usually get out to Driftwood.. rather, I get it at the 360 location and at the airport when I'm travelling.

Agreed on County Line, though -- it's nothing special. Rudy's is good, though.

Regionally I'm a fan of Kruez market (before and after location change), and Coopers.

I was served HEB Precooked brisket one time... it was awful. I think HEB Precooked anything is probably pretty bad. Although I love shopping there, I wouldn't eat their precooked or sushi.

I think it's trendy to hate on the Salt Lick, Iron Works, and Rudy's. And all are exceptionally good.
