Looking at the map that shows "Any snow" will cancel schools, I guess things have changed. I graduated high school in 1960, and even though it snowed three or four times every winter in Chickasha, Oklahoma, we never had "Snow days." We just walked, rode our bikes, rode our Cushman Eagle motor scooters, and finally drove our cars (See the age progression?) to school. The school buses were for kids that lived in the country. If you lived in town, you got there the best way you could.

Dang, I'm gettin' old!

It snowed many more than three times a year where I lived, but same thing. County schools cancelled frequently because of the buses, but our city school got to go in at 9 sometimes. I remember only a couple of snow days in all those years. We were able to walk to school, though it wasn't a fun walk in subzero temps. Once, my mom bundled us up and pulled us on a sled. Think she wanted to be sure we didn't die along the way. I don't remember precisely how cold that was, but the coldest temps we saw were 20 or so degrees below zero.

However, ice is different, even if just a little ice, with much more traffic and the few who generally show no awareness of traffic hazards...not willing to take the time and slow down appropriately for the weather. Still get the tailgaters, even in bad surface conditions.

As far as the schools go, I think they can't win.
They are darned if they don't cancel or cancel early enough; the Tuesday cluster that saw schools being cancelled and kids on buses with traffic at a stand still or sliding down the sloped highways.
And, darned if they do cancel; this past Friday when there was almost no precipitation and no real reason the kidlets could not have all been in school.

IMO from what I have heard, this weather is such a fluke it would be silly and economically foolish for the cities to spend the funds for equipment they most likely won't need again for several years.

Can't please everyone all the time. As a parent, I was not bothered by any of the school issues and as an employee I was thankful for an employer who let us stay at or work from home as a precaution.
