Does anyone remember that guy who built a floating shanty on Town Lake and lived in it for a short period of time? It was early 90s. I'd appreciate any details whatsoever.

I was only 8 but I remember it as the bum boat. I also think the kept a duck hostage on the boat.

It was a goose named Homer. Info about the raft and the homeless protest on town lake in 1988 is difficult to find on the web. Probably could dig something up on Google books, though. Here is a tidbit from a more recent statesman article:

That was called the USS Homer, and was the brain child of a longtime east Austin gadfly, Lori Renteria. There were actually two guys living on it. They created some "group" - whose name I can't remember - to "advocate" for more spending on Austin's homeless. Renteria bought the goose at Callahan's (that I CAN remember), and they threatened to kill the goose unless their demands were met.

We were so much more fun when street theater like this and the circus over the Barton Creek PUD were bi-weekly fixtures of Council.
