I can concur with you here. I just moved from northern NV (-30s in the winter) and I loathe that kind of cold. None of that nonsense here.

Affordability really depends on your needs/desires. I found an apartment in Wells Branch for 750+. Not the greatest but fine for me and the critters until the fam joins me later on. At that time, we will likely buy a house with acreage (have horses and the like) far from Austin proper. Properties in the "boonies" are considerably more affordable than those near the city. It doesn't appear that is you situation but that is what I can speak to.

As far as jobs...I took a position with a large employer in the area (again, not your situation). I was able to negotiate a bit higher salary based on COL in Austin. I had offers from OR, KS and VA but chose Austin based on career potential and that I have spent time in the Hill Country and enjoy it there (and no income tax which I'm used to!)

As I mentioned I did move from somewhere else but I had been to Austin previously (military= well -traveled).

From what I've seen, Austin has something for everybody but I came knowing what I liked and what I wanted.

I've just read that Austin has an unemployment rate of less than 5%, one of the lowest in the country. I've never been there, but curious what is the catch.

Depending on where you are coming from it may be expensive.

Depending on where you are coming from the traffic may be bad.

Depending on where you are coming from it may seem hot.

Depending on where you are coming from the salaries may be low.

So.

It kinda depends.

Where ya coming from?

Chicago.

As we have a high unemployment rate in the area here, I was looking for the area with the lowest, however, I was surprised it was Austin, as so many people are moving there.
