Where is a good place in the SW to store a bunch of stuff? We're getting ready to stage our house in Atlanta and thought we'd go ahead and get our stuff down to Austin. We might do the POD thing and have them store it but my husband wanted to compare prices. Thanks!

How big? I'm just about to get rid of my storage unit. It's in South-Central Austin, and there is a wait list. I would be willing to sublet, if necessary.

I'm not sure, we haven't researched yet the sizes and prices. I've never had a storage place before. Waiting lists, eh? Hmmmm... interesting.

That's only because it's central. Outside Austin, storage is less expensive. I pay $100 for my 10 X 10.

try staying away from public storage.

When I was in San Francisco, I had put my stuff in the local PS for two months. After that I removed my stuff and paid the office the balance and made sure that there was nothing outstanding.

Then after 1-1.5 months, slowly all my credit cards started being declined whenever I try using them at any store. I called them came to know that there are collection charges on my credit history..!! So I called the credit bureaus and came to know that Public Storage had put $25 collection fee.

I inquired with them and they said there were some boxes on the property (not my storage unit or floor), but somewhere in entire PS. And since I was the only one moving out that day, they thought I left it. WTF So tomorrow if I just throw1-2 empty boxes at midnight in the parking lot, they will charge the poor fellow who moved out that day???

And then I asked why didn't you guys bother to send me a letter saying I owe $25. Why did you directly report it to collection agency. And they said, we mailed it, its not our fault if you don't receive it..!! I am pretty sure they didn't mail. So they don't do any correspondence or phone call and directly place it to collection agency.

I followed up the matter with the their regional manager and she told that I should pay the collection agency and PS will send me a reimbursement check and make sure that collection is removed from my credit history. I paid and haven't received any reimbursement check from them. Its been more than a year now. I didn't bother to followup since it was only $25. They also didn't remove it from credit history. I had to do with all three bureaus, calling them and writing numerous letters.

Some of friends had similar incidents. In TX they might be different, but I would suggest to stay away from them.

A little late for hope...she's 'unstored', moved and moved again since the thread was started. Always good to have new info, however.

Looking at my THIRD place in Austin. Funny to see these old threads resurrected!

Thanks for the info on Public Storage. We may need a unit in the near future and this is good to know.
