Hello All,

Last year, my husband and I managed to consolidate our whole family in Austin. We and our four kids are in Westlake, my 30-something brother-in-law is downtown, my mom (78) is at Longhorn Village in Steiner Ranch, and my mother-in-law (68) rents a small apartment downtown. We love Westlake, my mom LOVES Longhorn Village, and my bro-in-law loves downtown, but my mother-in-law needs to find a more permanent situation. On one hand, she loves the accessibilty of being downtown, but she has lived in these apartment complexes with young, primarily single working people, who comprise the bulk of those places. She's lonely because she doesn't work and doesn't meet people, and she doesn't have a lot of money to buy a place. We're suggesting she go outside of the city, but since we're also relatively new, we don't know where to direct her. She'd love to still be within a half-hour of downtown, and she doesn't want the maintenance or upkeep of owning a single-family home, so we're looking at condos or townhomes. Does anyone have a suggestion for developments that aren't too far out, but that would have an active population of retirees? She's VERY active, loves to do stuff, is in good shape. Could spend no more than $325k for two bedrooms. Anything on or near Lake Travis, but still close-in? Any thoughts would be appreciated!
Thanks so much!

DM me. I think she should look for a rental in 78704. Especially in the Travis Heights area. There are MANY seniors and retirees in the neighborhood. In fact, they meet up monthly. If she is downtown, she should come to the monthly gatherings. She can meet peers, many are also transplants, many are long time residents. She can network -- which is the best way to find a house or apartment for rent in the area -- and they will have advice as well on other areas of Austin that might work for her.

There is another more traditional looking home at spicewood springs/mesa dr.

How about near or next to the Train at Lakeline. (for easy access to downtown) Tons of shopping there and an older demographic than downtown or the Arboretum.

I live in a gated Garden Home about 10 min. from there and our neighborhood is about 30% retired, 30% 50s - 65; and 40% young professionals (probably 70/30 women because of the gated feature). 50-75K under her "budget".

& then there's Gtown & Sun City.

I only have two data points on SC -- one, a long time Austinite and avid golfer, who bought up there about ten years ago (he's now 66). He absolutely loves it. Never a dull moment -- but it might be because he's a golfer.

Then there's my sister, who has business there about two days a week. She says it looks like permanent summer camp for seniors.

I'd check it out. Might be the perfect solution. At least worth a look.
