My husband might have a job offer starting in December working on the new expressway being built at 183 between 290 and 71. We will be renting since we move for his job fairly often. Our oldest will be staying in Houston with relatives to finish HS, so schools will not be a factor in deciding where to live.

We have 2 med size dogs, they don't need a big yard, but an apartment won't work for us. I would rather not be suburbia hell, but want to get the most for our money. Our budget is around $1400/mo max and we only need 1-2 bedrooms. What areas do might work for us?

Your budget will be the limiting factor! Finding something with that budget with two dogs will be a challenge. You might find something to suit east of I35. between 290 and 71. Look for a residential lease on austinhomesearch (dot) com.

I found five active listings using Austin - East as the location that are in your price range. One specifies no pets, another says one small dog only. The other three do not mention pets, one says the lease must start in 14 days. If you won't need a place until December, it is really too soon to start looking.

What is that area like? Online it doesn't look too bad, but I would like an Austinite's opinion

Also if we decide to move out further, what are some good outlying towns near 183?

Anyone else? If my husband wants to live in the suburbs (bleh) what area should we be looking at keeping his job in mind?

Even looking at the ENTIRE area, including San Marcos, Elgin, Bastrop, Smithville, Georgetown, Pflugerville, etc, there are only 97 single family home rentals available in your price range. No telling how many will accept 2 dogs.

I know it's a long shot, but 97 is a pretty good start. Are all of those places a reasonable commute to 183?

Maybe half of them. Who knows what will be available in December? Basically, in late October/November start looking and jump at the first one in your price range that will take your dogs.
