Life will be harder and more limited without a car or a big Uber/taxi budget. UT students can get by without a car, folks who live on a bus line and work on the same line can manage. Dallas and Houston have better public transportation than Austin but NOWHERE in Texas has anything even close to the options/availability of NYC.

Texas is car-centric, there is no way around it. Houston and Dallas have options as far as taking you up and down a corridor via train, but not the entire city.

Apart from students, I know a handful of people who are able to live in East Austin and commute to their startup/web development-type job by bike to Downtown, but that's it. They eat out all the time and plan their grocery store runs with their roommates who have cars and rarely leave their section of town.
