The U.S. Army announced today that, after a months-long review of potential sites, its new Futures Command will be headquartered in Austin, Texas.
The new command, which will be led by a four-star general and have a headquarters staff of about 500, is part of what the Army calls its biggest reorganization in 45 years.

Interesting that the Army bid it out "Jeff Bezos" style. Smart way to get incentives I guess...

I'll ignore that, but this is a great win for Austin and SA.

This will probably help them attract/recruit better tech talent. I wonder if the workforce will be strictly military or if they will also employ civilian personnel?

Did anyone else hear the Army folks involved say:

"WHY are we moving where it's over 100 degrees for weeks at a time???"

It's a research and development command they're bringing, not a basic training facility or a depot to repair artillery. One of the articles in the OP says the decision was based on criteria like "patents filed." Brutal summer weather that discourages people in the command from going outside and engaging in distracting outdoor fun might be a plus!

Just like the tens of thousands of troops do at Fort Sam and Fort Hood.

Of course this new command organization will probably be staffed mainly by O-5s up to the 0-9 in charge. If they venture out much into the civilian recreational venues, they'll undoubtedly be in the 2nd Street & Rainey Street watering holes, with an occasional sojourn to the wilds of Northside at the Domain.

The F1 track pavement certainly ain't gonna handle the likes of the Abrams tanks.
Hamilton might have fun driving one though. lol
