My family will be relocating from the DC area and we have 3 large dogs that have dog doors and enjoy that Independence.

We are looking in the Lake Travis area for housing. With all the poisonous snakes is it a bad idea to allow them free access to the yard?!? I'm kinda freaking out a little honestly.

We plan to install snake proof fencing as well.

Thank you!!

I’d worry more about raccoons and possums coming in at night.

We close it down and lock at night. We do leave it open during day hours though. We have plenty of wildlife in our yard, rattle snake and Coral snakes are a huge concern for me tho!

The snakes will likely end up avoiding your yard, as well as the possums and raccoons.

Install an automatic dog door - each dawg can wear an electronic collar device that allows access, but the door is otherwise locked without it. No raccoons, coyotes, foxes, possums, or skunks in the house.

I'm in the Lake Travis area and our dog enjoys her dog door. Your fears are a little funny. We've never had any animals come in. We leave the door open all night, except when it's pouring rain as she likes to play in the rain. Same with the dog we had before her.

We've lived in the middle of Austin and currently live in the country (horses wouldn't fit on our lot in the middle of Austin) with a creek running through our property. We have had a couple of dogs snake bit over the last 22 years - they were both fine. As for "all the poisonous snakes", there really aren't that many, and your dogs would likely never encounter one. Lots of people with dogs of all sizes have dog doors here.

I think they are worried about the dogs encountering snakes in the yard, not snakes coming in.

It's definitely a possibility - every dog on our cul-de-sac but ours has been bitten by a rattlesnake (that's 5 total). I live in Steiner Ranch, very close to Lake Travis. We are on a greenbelt. It's just sort of something you have to live with. You can mitigate things a little. After having the 5th rattlesnake removed from our yard, the snake guy told us to get rid of our bird feeder. Apparently, birds are one of their favorite foods. Also rats and such feed off of the bird seed that falls on the ground, making for easy meals. It made a huge difference. Our dog also gets the rattlesnake vaccine and has done snake avoidance training. But honestly it's just dumb luck that she hasn't been bitten. If you go through your days worrying about it, you will go nuts. It's just part of life here.

My concern isn't anything getting into my home at all. I've always used dog doors in my home. My concern is whether that is realistic because of ratttle snakes in the yard and the possibility of a bite if I am not home and my dog is outside. I have a Greyhound, flat coat, and a golden retriever.

I intend to install a rattlesnake fence to help cut down chances and do not intend on having landscaping that will entice then to come in. I just feel like everyone ends you with bites on their dogs. I just didn't know if that was really a thing or if it's just internet fear.

I've lived in many places that had rattlers but never as prolifically as they are in Austin.

So I'm looking for advice on whether the freedom our dogs truly do enjoy will be hampered when we move and we can't install one for their safety?
