Towns near austin with lower property tax? (Vega: homes, property tax rates)

My wife and I are retired and are planning on moving to Texas. After spending time in the Austin area last summer, we were very impressed with the area and it’s housing values. For the same dollars, Austin area homes are about 1500 sq. ft larger than homes here in Las Vegas.

We plan on returning to the Austin area this spring to narrow down communities that would work for us. The one concern we have is the property tax as it appears to vary greatly from location to location.

We would like to fine an existing home with enough space to also keep our motor home, possibly with an outbuilding of some sort in the $250,000 to $400,000 range with the lowest property tax rates.

Can anyone suggest some towns (hopefully with some character) and counties within commuting distance to Austin?
