Trudy's for best Tex-Mex in my opinion.
Arandas is a statewide chain which sells cheap Mexican food. It's good, but there are much, much better taquerias out there.
Magnolia has the best queso IMHO.
Dirty Martin's Place near UT has excellent burgers, and they've been doing it for about 80 years now.
Can't go wrong with Pluckers wings.
If you want to try something amazing(ly unhealthy), go to Big Bite on 24th and Guadalupe. You can get a double cheeseburger, French fries, chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks, bacon, eggs, ketchup, and mayo ALL ON THE SAME SANDWICH!

I agree... I like the names and I heard that there are good restaurants in East Austin.

Will check out Trudy's for sure but pass on the Big Bite!

I'm a big fan of chinese food and some of the best I've ever had outside of Chinatown is at DragonGate in Davenport Village on 360.

I also like NY style pizza. A friend at work recommended Homeslice. Has anyone here had it, or know of a better place?

Shady Grove is pretty good, better atmosphere though.
Roaring Fork for a slightly upscale restaurant
Tons of good Mexican food, however my favorite is probably Matts El Rancho
Pizza-Yaghis but i've heard good things about homeslice.
Chinese-well, that's a tough one. Probably the China BBQ on North Lamar at the Chinatown shopping center.
Italian-Ciolas in Lakeway hands down.
Seafood-Eddie V's or Trulucks(downtown locations are best for both chains)
Breakfast-Magnolia
Burger-Dirtys by Campus
Sushi-Uchi on S. Lamar
Happy Hour place/small apps-219 West, Kona Grill, or Maria Maria

You absolutely must have hit it on an off night - I've never had anything like what you're describing there.

Trudy's, to me, is okay, but not really anything special.

This really describes all Tex-Mex in Austin. It doesn't really hold a candle to Dallas and San Antonio in this regard.

Agreed. As good as Flores is, it doesn't hold a candle to the dives in SA, which I don't get. We're only an hour or so away.
