No. What mimi is trying to say is that "brown" is not an ethnic or racial type!

There are places, particular in the urban US, where "brown" is a shorthand slang that references the term "people of color." That seems to be the way that you are using it.

Ethnicity and race are both cultural constructions and they have a particular history and they shift over time.

Hispanic is a census bureau term that tries (awkwardly) to capture something about people who share a connection to the Spanish speaking world although they may or may not currently speak Spanish. One of the many complications with the term is that due the history of the Americas, folks who fall into the category "Hispanic" can be found among people who are racially classified as African, Asian, and Caucasian!

Got it?

many politicians, judges and community leaders have used the term "brown" when referring to native Mexicans, South Americans ... (i.e. native "Indians")

I've seen the colorblind movement happen. It is hilarious. Even black people utilize that theory, of course it's to their detriment. And like I said earlier even if you are European Hispanic you will still have some BROWN features and Latin facial features. Hispanic people don't usually look like White Anglos even if they are not Mexican. Look at Ricky Martin he has Latino features yet his skin is sandy. Are we going to go around calling our sweet hot latino Ricky a white dude now??

Look at this Roseyln Sanchez. You can tell she is Hispanic because she has Latin features. You cannot claim COLOR BLIND on her.

I don't know why some posters here have difficulty recognizing or acknowledging such simple, obvious truths. Perhaps they are trying hard to advertise themselves as "colorblind" by calling these "brown" Hispanics "white"

Most people judge you on your color and facial features. Second they judge you by your last name.

Most people are brown, or shades thereof. That's not a very interesting statement. Back to the discussion.

That's clearly Hispanic. I doubt that the spinners would dare argue otherwise.

nice try.

I used "brown" in the generally understood sense here ... of "native Mexican" or "native Indian" descent.

maybe she thinks that it's cool to be "colorblind".

these days "political correctness" trumps intellectual honesty, science, and common sense.
