No nice homes ... as in most of Texas people live in mud huts with dirt floors. There are a few cowboys I know sleeping out on the open plains while herding their cows. Also some upscale tepees that native Americans (Indians) live in in north and west Austin 'burbs.

Also no jobs in Austin ... most are on gubermint assistance or live off the land.

What is "competitive cheerleading"?

They do play the best brand of high school football in the world in Texas and Austin has some good ones ... do the search on this site! Can you throw a nice tight spiral 50 yards? The girls play it(football) too! Or they play volleyball and basketball. Or run track. Or play softball.

????????

Here is a link to a rating database published by the state. You can look up schools by county, district, etc.
2007 Accountability Rating System

Regarding cheerleading, I can't say that I know much about that except that I've traveled past a cheerleading academy on FM 1826 between Austin and Driftwood. I've heard that the people who run it travel throughout the nation as judges. You might run some Google searches to get better information

Are you really asking if a lot of kids go to highschool here?? Or, did you word it wrong? What, do you think they are off and working on the ranch out of 8th grade?

Okay, this is clearly a kid posting. I don't think offense was intended. Just an anxious pre-adolescent who is moving here with her parents.

Do you know where in Austin you might be moving to?

And what kind of jobs you (or your parents) are looking for?

If you can be a bit more specific I am sure we can help

There are plenty of nice homes, nice jobs and nice high schools - don't worry.

I got that impression too megan competitive cheerleading is pretty rampant around here. Lots of girls start at a pretty early age doing it and there are several schools around. Austin's a lot bigger than you may think. There are TONS of nice homes, and LOTS of young people pretty much in any area of Austin. It does have a University after all Try not to be too nervous. People are really friendly around here and I doubt it will take you much time to find your niche.

Default Thanks to the friendly folks!

Megan1967, southdown and love roses; Thanks for your kind and friendly responses. Yes, my daughter jumped in to send out her questions when I stepped away - clearly you are somewhat familiar with the myspace/texting - type lingo! Thanks for your info and reassurances. We are looking at some of the areas mentioned. I am an office manager for a family practice group and my husband is looking for semi-retirement career change and is open to lots of ideas. Our really burning questions:

how bad are the fire ants and/or other bugs?

does it ever get snowy or icy and if so, for how long?

how are newcomers viewed by the homegrown folks?

There is a whole thread about this, so I won't rehash it here, but it all depends on your point of view. I never notice the bugs, but I grew up here.

Every two or three years, on average, we have a bad icy day or two in a row. That is about it. When it snows, you usually have to get up early or you will miss it . Sometimes it last through the day, but we are talking every 4 to 8 years, maybe?

What homegrown folks? Really, there are so many newcomers, it isn't even funny. I suppose in a smaller town there might be some reaction from some, but truly, it is more depend on your personality than your point of origination.
