hello everyone,

I just received a job offer in Austin! I'm a single, 24-year-old Floridian looking for a change of scenery.

I was wondering about the cost of living in Austin? I like to party, so how is the rental housing options near the night life districts.

Any words of advice?

Just go on Craigslist and take a look at what the going rates are, along with the Austin-American and Chronicle newspaper/websites.....There are hardly any rental options in the night life DT, just high rise condos, and not even many of them. Depends what you consider "near". If you want something right outside your door, you have a handful of condos to work with and some very expensive rentals, if you can find them. If you can ride a bike/hike/drive a few miles(2-3M) you can find something around UT or south of DT pretty reasonable.

Where is your job located? Really, you don't want to set yourself for a horrible commute. Rents downtown aren't going to be cheap and there are lots of options for cool places to live that are within an easy commute to downtown. What part of town will you be working in?

That's pretty much right where the center of the hipster universe in Austin is... North of Oltorf on either Lamar or S. Congress would be a very fun place to live. I'd just look for a place right there.

^ Thanks! I don't start until May, so I have plenty of time to scope out the neighborhood. Living near where I work would be a bonus.

You'll be fine, and in 'party' heaven. Enjoy and keep Austin weird.

I'm excited! I'll bump this thread and give a forum update on where I ended up settling and my immersions on the city.

Wow, that is some real old-person advice right there, since those are the absolute worst ways to search for rentals. Instead, for some relevant advice: check out PadMapper or Zumper.

Perhaps a tad more relevant a DECADE ago when this thread was active.
