A 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck close to New Zealand's second-largest city of Christchurch early Saturday local time, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, and the USGS did not immediately warn of the threat of tsunamis.
Isn't that a little unexpected for that area?
I know there is an underwater rift west of New Zealand.
go to high ground and hope for the best. over 7. is a big one

No earthquakes are very common in NZ although thankfully most go unnoticed.
NZ lies right on a fault line - it sits between the Pacific and Indo-Australian plates.
I remember driving west from Christchurch in the mid 1990s after work one night. Suddenly the back half of my car was thrown one way (like it had been hit by a sledgehammer). I pulled over, expecting a blown tyre or two. Then I noticed a car behind me and their occupants were also checking their car. It was a sizeable quake about the same location as this one (although not as severe).
Have some friends in Chch but haven't heard from them yet.
Thankfully apart from some broken ornaments and in a state of shock, they are safe . Still have aftershocks .
and this will be a long and challenging time/road for everyone there. From the pictures and video on the internet, things look bad and I forgot that it is winter there.
Yes they have earthquakes now and then but not like this. 7 is like the one that hit Haiti I think. Had experience a few in CA but maybe 5 is max.
Was thrown out of bed. Constant very strong aftershocks.
Thankfully no one killed. If it happened during daylight hours many would have lost their lives. Have looked around my neighbourhood. Some streets completely fine, some streets are a warzone.
Man just so lucky the earthquakes we've had down here haven't been on that close to populated areas.
Some unreal damage there.
