Anyone else get annoyed with people who have this belief that the entire Australian continent experiences year round tropical weather?
When traveling around the US and Europe during winter people always presume as an Australian I've never seen snow before. Well no, I live 2 hours from the biggest Ski resort in the southern hemisphere and live in Canberra which has year round lower minimums than the likes of London.
It's the start of summer and today I flew from Melbourne where it was 12 degrees Celsius to Canberra where it's 13.
Well yeah, of course...I don't think Aussies are much more enlightened about America either though, truth be told. Half of Australia is tropical, and while we're not always hot, most of the continent is more warm/hot than not.
Plus most Aussies have not seen snow, especially here in WA. I only first saw it when I was 16 and my sister, born'n'bred in Perth, who is 22 still has not.
There are not many populated places in Australia that regularly see snow, and that actually settles.
I have been through sleet in Lithgow just west of the Blue Mountains, but other than that only in the Snowy Mountains.
But yes, most of the populated areas in Australia are not that hot, except in short bursts.
Northern Australia (ie the Tropics itself) is sparsely populated, and has been the subject of another recent thread as to why that is the case.

Its not heavily populated I know, but the centre is pretty hot, day in day out for weeks on end.
I should mention it was something like -27 near Edmonton today with the wind chill....so, appreciate what ya got my Aussie friends lol
With windchill.....even somewhere like Canberra is cold in winter "with the wind chill".....
