Well, I've been living in the US(currently in California) for about 12 years now. I was born in S. Korea and lived in London and Adelaide before I got my scholarship at one University in Texas.(Then I immigrated through work) I missed almost everything about Australia in my earlier years in the US(probably due to the culture shock in Texas). And talking about racism, yes, there were certain racists in Australia but nothing comparable to ones in Texas.
After I got so much used to the racism(of course not all Texans!), I felt so weird about people's attitude in Seattle, WA while I was doing my internship- why these people are so nice and accepting? I even thought there were the nicest people in the world at one point... Personally I loved my life in Seattle while my Aussie friend hated his boring life in Seattle. He's from Pearth, and we came together from Texas for the internship. Texas seemed a more interesting place for him. (Well, one of his complaints was that he could get girls very easily in Texas with his "exotic" aussie accent! haha) I guess it is quite relative. Depending on where you come from and what you expect. For me, just getting out of racism or prejudice was just fantastic!
Now I live in Orange county, Southern California. Here people aren't nice as Seattlites but I haven't experienced something really bad as I did in Texas, either. I would say, my life in Adelaide was somewhat similar to my life in SoCal except that I had to learn Spanish to mix with more people here. As someone pointed out, there were some jerks always no matter where you go(oh man, UK..there are a lot! nothing comparable to Aussie or US), I still miss many things in Australia while my life in the US is not so bad. Maybe I should visit Australia someday again to iron my accent..haha.
If at birth we had a choice of what country we would be from, I would have chosen Australia. We don't have that choice at birth, so Im glad I had the parents I did have in life and they were americans as I am, so here is where I will die.
I like living in Australia, but there aren't many jobs around, so I'll probably move to the UK eventually, after I graduate with my degree. Also, I really like Englishmen! I really don't know enough about the reality of living in America to judge...
If you come to the UK for work you might be in for a shock. It aint pretty here at the moment.
