for sheer dependability, the nod definitely goes to the Volvo 240. If you want a bit more style, then the choice would be a Mercedes W123. A lot more style, Mercedes W126. Both are very dependable, but I'd seek one out that's more basic-equipped to avoid notorious Euro-car electrical issues. Another worthy mention would be a big-body RWD 1980's Cadillac, but ONLY if equipped with an Olds or Chevy V8, or the V8-6-4 rigged to stay running on all 8 cylinders. Anything else under the hood from that time period, RUN, don't walk away from.
Depends on how you prioritize certain features such as safety (disc brakes & ABS, airbags, NTM seat belts) and practicality (space, utility, etc.) AND BUDGET.
If it were up to me, I would pick a relatively safe and practical car such as a W123 or W124 Mercedes-Benz sedan or estate with the 3.x liter I6 petrol engine or 5-cylinder turbo diesel (which can also be converted to WVO/bio diesel if low fuel costs are a concern).
Yup, i'm considering a w123 perhaps even a w116 or a w108/9. i have an old uncle who still drives his 300d which he's had since new and his wife, my aunt, still drives a w108 280se which she's had since new. both are used as daily drivers
I still say that if VW would put the same body on a New Beetle base they wouldn't be able to keep them on the lots.
Of course, if you're interested in safety and reliability you'll stick with the new cars. No comparison.

If you're willing to take the chance, there's always a selection of them on eBay.
I'd like to have something like this with Vintage Air Heat & A/C to just tool around in. I'd have a no-frills paint job on it so if I got a rock chip it wouldn't break my heart.

I know less about the W108/9, but the 116s are said to be more complex. Easily more complex than the relatively simple 123 but supposedly more complex than its successor the 126.
If nothing else it will be easier to find a (decently maintained) 123, 124 or 126 vs a 108/9 or 116.
If you're serious about this I'd suggest checking out benzworld and a couple other forums (mbshop? mbcoupes? I forget the exact name) where there's quite a bit of specialist info.
