In CA the state will pay you to retire it. You'll have to find out about the title. If you're low income you can get $1500 for it, if not then $1,000. It has to drive into the lot, and have been registered for the last two years, I think, and have certain things working, etc., on it. Anyway, check into this:

I retired my last old Toyota for $1,000 and bought my current Corolla for $900. Have had it for about 7 years, and just applied to retire this one for $1500. They used to require that they fail smog, but that rule changed this year. I now live in a county where smog testing isn't required, but they said I can still retire it, even though it didn't fail a smog test.
